We were scrolling through a Montana social media group on Facebook when one particular photo made us stop mid-scroll. Posted by Samir Alfonzo, this stunner from the Bighorn River featured a fish that looked like it had been 3D-rendered by Pixar’s animation team. The kind of photo where you have to zoom in and wonder, “Did this trout just have professional headshots taken?”

But nope, Samir insists the photo is 100% real, no Photoshop and no AI enhancements–just pure Bighorn River magic and a fish that either loves the camera or was caught mid-“what is happening to me?” expression. Either way, the timing was perfect. It really is a great reminder that you truly never know when a once-in-a-season shot is going to happen. Sometimes the stars align, the trout cooperates (or panics photogenically), and the shutter clicks at just the right millisecond.

So, basically, always take the picture, because the fish might just decide to strike a pose.

Now, on to the Bighorn River Fishing Report by North Fork Anglers (as of June 28, 2025):

CFS: 1168 and holding steady.
Water Conditions: Fishing is excellent, but the grass is starting to make its presence known—bring patience and a fly comb.
Where to Find ‘Em: Fish have shifted from deep runs into the shallow riffles due to warm water.

Flies That Are Getting Eaten:

  • Topwater: Hoppers, Tricos, PMDs
  • Nymphs: Poxyback Sow, Yum-Yum Sow, Herford’s Magic, Worm patterns (all the colors), Zirdles, Yuk Bugs, Scuds, Midges
  • Euro Stuff: Purple and pink Lucent Perdigons, Black Spanish Bullet
  • Still Hot: Firebead Sow, Ice Cream Cones
  • Streamers (if you dare): Sculpzilla, Rusty Trombone, Montana Mouthwash, Thin Mints

Worms, sows, and perdigons fished under a hopper are producing well—so if you’re into that “everything buffet” style of fishing, now’s the time.

Whether you’re out chasing that perfect fish or accidentally capturing the next viral fishing photo, the Bighorn is showing off in all the right ways right now. And hey, if your trout doesn’t pose quite like Samir’s, just remember: fish are unpredictable, and you never know when one will.

Tight lines, and keep that camera ready!
