Every angler has their favorite places to fish. For some the spots are special because of the size, species, or abundance of fish that you may catch. Others have special memories about a place where they hammered the fish, met a new friend, or showed others how to fish. The Honey Hole may have just been the prettiest place on Earth.
Sadly, many of our best fishing Honey Holes are rarely the same. For a while, the fishery may have been exceptional but then it changed. The water changed, nature changed, others found out about it, or you just had a wonderful day. Expectations are often low during the first attempt or visit.
I fished a river in Pennsylvania called Conewago Creek. This fishery was on the stocking schedule, and we had driven past it a hundred times. Finally, my brother and I stopped by to dip a line. We just picked a roadside pull off and we went to work.
The water conditions had been tough. The water was high, off color and full, but was quickly dropping and getting back into shape. There was not another angler to be seen. We slayed the trout! I mean, every trout in the creek was hungry and huge! I was casting a Panther Martin spinner and had fish after fish on. When the water cleared, the stream was loaded with feeding brown trout. These were wild fish. They had perfect fins and colors. My brother had one of his huge browns mounted!
We never had as good a day on the Conewago as that first one. We tried but never relived the past. I would still give it just one more try.
