A salmon researcher in Washington had the scare of her life back in the spring of 2018 when two wolves—guarding a den full of pups—chased her up a 30-foot tree until a chopper came to the rescue. No bites, just bark… and a whole lot of adrenaline. It all went down in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest a few years ago, but it’s a good reminder for Montanans: we have plenty of wolves here, too, and during pup season, they’re not shy about protecting their turf. With over a thousand wolves roaming Big Sky country, chances are if you’re fishing, hiking, or hunting in the backcountry this time of year, you could be closer to a den than you think. Bear spray might help, but knowing where you’re walking—and what is raising babies nearby—might be your best defense.
