At Two Ocean Pass in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest….practically a stone’s throw from the Montana border….water can literally choose its ocean it wants to go to. This interesting spot along the Continental Divide lets North Two Ocean Creek split into Atlantic Creek and Pacific Creek, sending water toward two different coasts. It is one of the only places on Earth where a fish could (in theory) swim from the Pacific side of the Rockies to the Atlantic side of the country.

It’s a short drive from Yellowstone, and you cross the Divide three times just on the main roads! This corner of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem shows how an invisible line can shape entire watersheds, fish migration, and even history.

So, the next time you are in southern Montana, just remember that a few hours south, raindrops are still deciding whether they’re beach-bound for California or Maine.
