Summer is winding down, and whether you’ve been out hunting, fishing, trapping, or just soaking up the last rays while working or playing outside, chances are you’ve picked up some pretty memorable tan lines along the way. Anyone who spends long days on the water, in a blind, or hiking ridgelines knows the classic “gear tan”—pale skin where waders, shirts, or hats cover, and sun-scorched arms, faces, and necks everywhere else. A viral photo out of Iowa proves it’s not just anglers or hunters rocking these badges of outdoor living: one hard-working man took off his cap for the national anthem at a dirt track race and revealed a tan line so sharp it looked like he was still wearing a hat. Call it Cap-Tan America, call it a sign of a life well-lived in the sun—but if nothing else, it’s a reminder that sometimes the outdoors leaves its mark in more ways than one.
