Humans need things in their lives that are honest, legal, healthy, and FUN! As kids, we used to go outside to play and run around with our friends. Nature and “outside” was our sanctuary.
I was born in the Appalachian Mountains of western Maryland. It was this heritage that is in my DNA. Hunting, fishing, camping, and foraging in remote places were normal. We often played in the special places that surrounded our town.
In Montana, many of us are still close to nature. A stream, river, forest, or field is just down the road. We can get to these places on a short walk or ride. Once there we can unwind, de-stress, and recharge.
Hobbies that are healthy become a positive addiction. Hunting and fishing have rules, limits, regulations, and safety built into them. Having these rules and limits defines our habits and choices.
Scouting is also a way to learn how to be your best. The 12 Scout Laws, and doctrines of many youth organizations, define how to become our best selves.
Outdoor sports teach us how to make better choices, survive, and excel. Its not just for boys or girls, adults or kids. We can find these wonderful Hobbies at any point in our lives. Many adults take up fly fishing or begin to camp. They may shoot a camera rather than carry a gun. Anglers can Catch and Release or learn to have a fish fry. To each their own. The important thing is to discover that something that helps you become your best.
Sitting in front of a computer, I Pad, TV, or staying indoors is not the only pathway. Test your limits and explore what other hobbies may take you outdoors and to the special places where you can be healthy and happy.
Be Your Best!
