In a story equal parts strange and curious, authorities in Connecticut have reported two squirrels that appear to have been painted—and while the little critters seem fine, officials are on the hunt to figure out who’s behind this colorful caper. It’s a quirky reminder that even in Montana, where elk, deer, wolves, and bears usually steal the spotlight, wildlife of all sizes deserves respect—and no matter how small, painting, harming, or stressing animals is never okay.

If you happen to have friends and/or family over there, or maybe you’re visiting, and know anything about these painted squirrels, Connecticut authorities ask that you call 860-291-7572 and leave a message.
