Region 3 Otter Trapping Closure

Region 3 Otter Trapping Closure

March 29, 2026 by Angela Montana

If you’ve been keeping a close eye on the riverbanks in Southwest Montana, it’s time to shift gears. By order of the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission, the otter trapping season in Region 3 is officially coming to a close.

The Clock is Ticking: Midnight Deadline

The curtain closes on otter trapping in Region 3 at midnight on Tuesday, March 31. After the clock strikes twelve, the traps need to be up, and the season is officially in the books for this area.

Why the Closure? (in case you’re new!)

Montana FWP manages species like the river otter through a quota system. These limits ensure that otter populations remain healthy and sustainable for generations to come. When the threshold is met, the Commission closes the season—which is exactly what we’re seeing happen now in the Great Falls and surrounding Region 3 areas.

Stay in the Loop

Rules can change fast depending on harvest numbers. If you want to check the current quota status for other regions or look ahead to next season, FWP makes it easy.

You can find the latest updates and full species hunting guides directly on the Official FWP Website.
