Fort Peck Lake, MT — The 39th Annual Montana Walleye Governor’s Cup is set for July 9–11, 2026 on Fort Peck Lake, and this year’s tournament is shaping up to be one of the most angler-friendly editions yet. With a guaranteed $20,000 top prize (based on a minimum field of 175 teams), a new photo catch-and-release format, and brand-new random daily weight payouts, organizers have built a tournament where seasoned pros and weekend warriors alike have a real shot at taking home cash.
If you’ve been thinking about getting back into tournament fishing — but didn’t love the idea of squaring off against the top sticks every single day — this is the event for you.

A New Twist: Random Daily Weight Payouts
Here’s where the 2026 Gov Cup gets interesting. In addition to the traditional payout to the top 10% of the field, organizers have added a new Random Weight Side Pot that completely changes the game for anglers who don’t normally find themselves at the top of the leaderboard.
Each day, four random total weights will be drawn, and the teams holding those weights win cash EXCLUDING THE TOP 10%. With a full field of 200 teams paying the $200 random-weight entry, that works out to $5,000 per draw, per day for four lucky teams. That’s $20,000 on July 10 and another $20,000 on July 11 up for grabs purely on luck of the draw.
The entry fee for the random weight pot is $200 per team (100% payback), and like all Gov Cup pots, every dollar goes back to the anglers.
Side Pots and Daily Payouts
- The Gov Cup has always been known for its stacked side pots, and 2026 is no exception:
- Big Fish Pot — Daily payouts for the biggest walleye (and bass)
- Wee Walleye Pot — Daily payouts (a Gov Cup classic)
- Day Money — Paid 100% on a sliding scale based on participants
- Additional Side Pots — Daily payouts throughout the tournament
Optional add-ons at registration include $100 for day money and $80 for the big fish pots. Side pots can be entered at registration or added later.
Photo Catch-and-Release via the E-Tournament App
The 2026 tournament continues with the photo catch-and-release format using the E-Tournament Fishing App. Anglers photograph and measure their fish on the water, log them through the app, and release them — keeping Fort Peck’s walleye fishery healthy for years to come while still giving every team a fair, verified shot at the leaderboard.
Why This Tournament Is Different
The Gov Cup has long been a fixture of the Fort Peck Lake Championship Series, but the addition of the random weight payouts is a deliberate move to broaden the appeal. As organizers put it: this year, it’s not just about being the best — it’s about getting lucky too.
If your team isn’t in the top 10% on a given day, you’re still in the hunt for $5,000 cash through the random draws. That’s a meaningful incentive for the angler who fishes Fort Peck a few weekends a year and wants to test themselves in a real tournament setting without feeling outgunned.
“Fish smart… or just get lucky.” That’s the unofficial motto for 2026, and it captures the spirit of the event perfectly.
