Set your alarms for 5:00 AM TOMORROW on Thursday, August 13th: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is opening a digital free-for-all for a small batch of unclaimed nonresident winter hound tags. If you’re an out-of-state hunter planning to run dogs for mountain lions, you’ll need one of these—unless you’re guided by a pro, hunting your own massive 640+ acre ranch (or neighboring within 2 miles), or are an outfitter yourself.
It’s first-come, first-served online or at any FWP office/ambassador, and speed is key because supply is critically low. Exactly two tags each are up for grabs in five specific hunting districts:

- 294-00
- 494-00
- 694-00
- 695-00
