Montana’s general big game hunting season opens Oct. 24 — the early youth deer hunt runs Oct. 15–16 — and hunters have several options for buying their licenses, according to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks press release. Licenses can be purchased online at ols.fwp.mt.gov, at any FWP regional or area office, or at a “License Ambassador” location: a participating local business or library that hosts a dedicated computer or tablet connected to FWP’s Online Licensing System. “Currently there are 183 active ambassadors. 29 of which are at rural county libraries,” the release states, adding that several city and county libraries have recently joined the program while some businesses that previously sold licenses may no longer offer the service.
Hunters should note a few details before visiting an ambassador. All transactions there are card-only, so anyone paying with cash or check must go to an FWP office. Ambassadors may charge a transaction fee, printer availability varies by location, and the level of staff assistance differs as well. A list of participating locations is available at fwp.mt.gov/buyandapply/license-ambassadors. Whichever option hunters choose, licenses can be emailed and printed at home within five days, or accessed as an E-Tag on the MyFWP app (fwp.mt.gov/myfwpapp).
