Stalk Like a Heron at Rock Creek, Fish Like You Mean It

Rock Creek has officially entered its skittish fall era, sitting around 265 cfs near Clinton, down slightly from the last report, and clear enough that the trout can count the knots in your leader. Float season is officially over; per Kingfisher Fly Shop’s report, “Floating is no longer allowed on Rock Creek,” so lace up the wading boots and embrace the sneaky-stroll life. The upside of skinny, glassy water is that the fish practically draw you a map — pocket water, boulder edges, plunge pools, shaded banks, soft seams — but it comes with fine print, because “Fish are easier to locate at these flows, but they are also easier to spook.” Translation: stalk like a heron, pick your water apart before stepping into it, and remember that “In the clearer water, smaller dries, lighter tippet, and careful drifts can make a big difference.”

Today’s clouds and showers should keep things fishy once the cold-morning chill burns off, and the weekend’s sunny, mild stretch (Clinton highs in the upper 60s to low 70s) just slides the best dry-fly window to late morning and afternoon. Meanwhile, the fall bug buffet is fully stocked — hoppers, ants, and beetles along the grassy banks, BWOs for whenever the sky sulks,

October Caddis already making a fashionably early cameo, with Mahogany Duns and Hecubas waiting in the wings — and if the fish start ghosting you, a small Woolly Bugger, Thin Mint, or sculpin pattern worked through the plunge pools is the aquatic equivalent of leaving a voicemail they can’t ignore.’
