Think of the Boulder River as a fishbowl with rocks in it. According to Montana Angler’s October 9, 2026 report, the river’s running low and gin clear — which sounds dreamy until you remember the trout can see you, your shadow, your dog, and your good and bad casting habits. These fish are spooky, so forget the flailing: choose the deep holes and slow runs, make your first cast your best cast, because you probably won’t get a second one.
Land-based ops only. The water’s too low to floa. But it’s totally wadeable… if “wadeable” is a good word for boulder-hopping. Bring good boots and a good attitude.
The silver lining: it’s brown trout season. Some bruisers have made it from the Yellowstone, so while the river’s shy right now, it’s packing some heavyweight punch.
So, basically, the water is low, clear, and jumpy — sneak like a ninja, cast like it matters (it does), and you might just tangle with a Yellowstone brown doing its October migration!
