Western Montana is deep into late-October fishing, and the whole day now fits into a five-hour window: cold overnight water in the low-to-mid 40s shuts the mornings down, so the bite builds from about 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and sunrise starts are wasted effort.
Flows are low, clear, and cold across the region, which means longer leaders, 5X–6X tippet, deliberate approaches, and fishing deeper holding water over faster water. Blue-winged Olives are the primary insect now, joined by Mahogany Duns at midday, midges on the cold nights, October Caddis on warm afternoons early in the week, and streamers as the season tightens.
Sunday through Wednesday stay mild in the low-to-mid 60s; a significant front arrives Thursday with clouds, rain, and possible thunderstorms, followed by a colder, wetter Friday near 50 and a Saturday that starts around 30 and tops out in the upper 40s — that back half is the best BWO and streamer window of the week.
The middle and lower Bitterroot remain the best overall call, with the lower river at 840 cfs offering the most forgiving water and the strongest hatch mix, while the Clark Fork is the region’s best big-water option at 1,530 cfs above Missoula and could be the best dedicated dry-fly river once Thursday and Friday turn grey. The Blackfoot is fully usable again for float planning at 593 cfs after the construction closure below Weigh Station was lifted October 2, Rock Creek is technical wade-only water at 265 cfs with boats prohibited through November 30, and the West Fork at 80 cfs is expert-only — most anglers are better served on the mainstem.
