Have You Seen “Flessie”, the Flathead Lake Monster?

January 21, 2025 by Angela Montana

Flathead Lake’s legendary “Flessie” has been making waves for centuries, starting with a Kutenai tale of an antlered beast bursting through the ice and causing pure chaos. We are only bringing this up because it is ice fishing season in quite a bit of Montana…just saying. Then in 1889, a steamboat captain and 100 passengers claimed they saw a whale-like creature, kicking off over a century of spine-tingling sightings. Locals describe her as a mashup of an eel, snake, and whale, while skeptics suggest it’s everything from floating logs to a rogue buffalo (yes, seriously).

Montanans still keep Flessie in their hearts—and on their minds. Reports continue to trickle in, like the 2017 sighting of a 40-foot, steel-eyed serpent gliding through the water, or the 3-year-old in 1940 who said the creature saved him from drowning. Whether she’s rocking the eel thing, fishy features, or a shark fin tail, Flessie remains the queen of mystery, though skeptics might argue she’s just an elaborate prank or a shadowy seal. Who really knows?

Be it ancient myth, wild imagination, or something as real as the 7-foot sturgeon hauled in during the ’50s, one thing’s for sure: Flessie knows how to keep Flathead Lake fascinating.

So, have you seen her? Or know someone who swears they did? Because the legend just keeps growing!
