Here’s the press release by FWP:

New trapper apprentice program starts this year

A bill introduced in the 2025 Montana legislative session added “trapper apprentice” as an option for new trappers.

Since 2022, residents aged 12 and over have been required to complete a Montana trapper education course to purchase a Montana resident trapping license or have purchased a trapping license in at least three prior years (in Montana or another state).

With this new trapper apprentice option, like the familiar hunter apprentice program, individuals 10 years and older can now obtain an apprentice trapping certificate, allowing them to purchase a resident trapping license or a nonresident trapping license and trap with a qualified mentor for up to two license years. Like the hunter apprentice program, after two years as an apprentice, individuals are required to pass a trapper education online course and field day to continue purchasing trapping licenses.

Mentors

Trapping mentors must be 21 years or older, have passed an approved trapper education course and hold a current resident trapping license. Mentors must accompany and supervise apprentice trappers within sight and direct voice contact at all times while afield, as well as carry the mentor form.

Apprentice licenses can be purchased and mentor forms filled out either online or in person at an FWP regional office. To find out more about the apprentice programs, click here: Apprentice program
