If you’re part of the Walleyes Unlimited of Montana (WUM) family, here’s an opportunity worth reeling in. The Jim Rettig Memorial Scholarship is back, offering at least two $1,500 scholarships each year to support WUM members and their dependent children as they head off to college this fall.
This scholarship isn’t just about financial support — it’s about honoring Jim Rettig’s legacy and investing in the next generation. Funds come from the sale of the Jim Rettig Memorial bronze sculptures, along with generous donations from chapters and individuals who believe in helping students chase their goals.
Important Deadline
All applications must be submitted by April 1st — no fish stories about missing paperwork! Make sure everything is complete before you hit submit.
Who Can Apply?
You’re eligible if:
- You’re a WUM member in good standing or
- You’re a dependent of a WUM member who has been in good standing for at least one year prior to the new fiscal year
(Recipients age 18+ will also receive an honorary one-year WUM membership — welcome to the club!)
What You’ll Need
To be considered, applicants must submit:
- A completed application form (online or printable version)
- A Letter of Interest explaining why the scholarship matters to you and outlining your short- and long-term goals
- A Letter of Recommendation from a school advisor or counselor confirming you’re a student in good standing
- Your most recent academic transcript
- Two references (at least one must be a WUM member)
Incomplete applications won’t be considered, so double-check your list before sending it in.
How It Works
Scholarship funds are awarded for the academic year starting in the fall semester, and checks are made payable directly to the school you’ll be attending. Winners are selected by a committee of WUM members and will be notified by letter no later than July 1st.
Each year requires a new application, so if you’ve applied before, don’t forget to cast your line again!
Opportunities like this don’t come along every day. If you’re part of the WUM community and planning your next academic chapter, this scholarship could help lighten the load. Apply, share your story, and take the next step toward your goals.
