Commission amendments proposed for August agenda item  

HELENA – Three proposed amendments for an item on the Aug. 19  Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting agenda are available for public review. People may comment on the amendments during the meeting.  

The amendments, proposed by Region 1 Commissioner Ian Wargo, would change the proposed Fall 2026–Winter 2027 Furbearer and Wolf Trapping and Hunting Seasons and Quotas as follows:  

Amendment 1 

  • In Region 1, retain the bobcat quota of 200 for one additional year.   
  • Remove the newly proposed wolf subquotas applicable from Sept. 5 through Dec. 31 

Amendment 2  

  • Establish regional wolf quotas, consistent with the regional quota structure used in the 2024-2025 regulations, as follows:
    • Region 1: 135 
    • Region 2: 95 
    • Region 3: 33 (excluding wildlife management units 313 and 316)
      • Wolf Management Unit (WMU) 313: 3   
      • WMU 316: 3 
    • Region 4: 30 
    • Region 5: 8 
    • Region 6: 5 
    • Region 7: 5 

Amendment 3 

  • Amend the wolf regulations as follows:
    • Establish one new WMU with boundaries corresponding to the combined boundaries of Deer and Elk Hunting Districts 140, 141, and 150.  
    • Establish a general wolf hunting season within this WMU from Sept. 15, 2026, through June 15, 2027.  
    • Wolf harvest within this WMU will apply toward the Region 1 quota and will not have a separate subquota.

The commission will meet at the Montana Heritage Center in Helena (225 N. Roberts St.) and virtually via Zoom Aug. 19 at 8 a.m.
