The Anti-Gym Membership (Comes With a Golden Retriever)

There’s a certain kind of hobby-inquiry that ends in a subscription, a schedule, and a low-grade guilt complex…and then there’s Montana’s version, which ends with a golden retriever named Finn who is objectively better at this than you and completely cool about it. Montana Bucks & Ducks runs beginner-friendly women’s pheasant hunts on 900 acres of private ranchland outside Dillon, where outfitter Kara Schuett, one of the few women guiding in that corner of the state, starts the morning with the unglamorous stuff (safety, fundamentals, a few warm-up shots), walks you all day behind dogs who genuinely love their jobs, and then hands you one more bonus skill nobody expects: cleaning and prepping the birds you take home.

So, you leave with dinner and an actual ability, not just a photo for the group chat. No gear, no experience, no weeklong elk-camp commitment required…and since the preserve season runs September through March, “I’ve always wanted to try that” has roughly seven months a year to stop being a hypothetical.
