Don Wilkins’ Weekly Fort Peck MT Fishing Report 10.9.26

Cold front’s rolling in, and that’s your green light: pike are already slamming spoons, shallow cranks and buzz baits in the weed beds, with smallies and lakers starting to slide up to join the party. Beat the front out there — or beat yourself up later.

Here’s the latest from Don Wilkins at Fort Peck (You can call him at 406.407.6648):

Pike -Find  the shallow weed beds and the fish will be there. More and more fish moving in shallow as we get farther into October. Spoons, shallow running crankbaits, and buzz baits all worked well last week

Smallmouth – Deeper rocks are still holding a lot of fish from 20-30 feet but we started catching some nice fish up shallow casting spoons for Northerns as well. I/8-1/4 ounce jigs with plastics/minnows or slip bobbers and minnows were the deal for us

Lake trout – Still  moving around a lot. Fish are there one day and gone the next. Good cold front coming in beginning of the week should start to drop surface temps and get the lakers looking to move shallow

Salmon are in the bays occasionally but the warm temps this past week have kept them out for the most part. Colder temps upcoming will hopefully bring them back in
