Nature has a way of reminding backcountry explorers exactly where they sit on the food chain, usually right when they start feeling comfortable. For one seasoned adventurer, a hike last year turned into a heart-pounding reminder of the outdoors’ unpredictability.

While he has experienced nearly 50 grizzly encounters in his time exploring the mountains, this latest incident marked a nerve-wracking “first”, and he had the camera rolling the entire time.

The Adrenaline Factor

In the footage, his nervousness in the moment is apparent. As he later said, when the “adrenaline nozzle” is turned wide open, polished commentary takes a backseat to survival. The footage captures the raw emotion of a human standing just yards away from a powerful predator and her yearling. Yikes.

A Near Miss in the Valley

The most unsettling realization of the day wasn’t just the proximity of the bears, but the series of events that nearly led to a disaster.

Positioned down by a creek, the hiker was surrounded by the sound of rushing water, which created a lot of noise. High above on a ridge, his buddies were shouting at the top of their lungs to warn him—the grizzlies had already run into them and were heading his way. Because of the creek’s acoustics, he didn’t hear a single shout.

The “lucky” pause: He stopped to film.

Had he not paused to capture the video, he would have continued his pace across the valley. With the creek sound hiding his footsteps and the wind most likely working against him, he would have walked directly into the path of the mother grizzly and her cub. That does not sound fun at all.

A Peaceful Resolution

Fortunately, the grizzly was not interested in him.

The hikers on the ridge were prepared to defend themselves in case the duo came back, but no intervention was necessary. Both humans and bears walked away from the encounter unscathed. Whew.

Timing Was Everything

Reflecting on the day, the hiker expressed some serious gratitude for what he viewed as divine protection. It serves as a reminder that in the mountains, sometimes a split-second decision to stop and record a video is the only thing standing between an adventure and a catastrophe. I’m sure we all have stories!

Bear Aware Tips

• Be a Loud Guest: Don’t rely on luck. Shout, sing, or talk loudly, especially near running water or thick brush where your scent and sound are muffled.
• The Buddy System: Stay close to your group. In this case, the ridge-dwellers were ready with their gear, which is exactly why you don’t hike (or hunt) solo in Griz country if you can help it.
• Carry the Spicy Spray: Always have bear spray accessible—not buried in your pack. It’s the ultimate “please leave” invite for a bear that gets too curious.
• Know the Body Language: If a bear stands up, it’s usually just trying to see or smell you better, not planning an immediate tackle. Give them space, back away slowly, and never turn your back to run.
