The number 7 applies to many aspects of elk hunting. With elk season upon us, here are some ways that seven relates to hunting these magnificent critters.

My brother visited several years ago to hunt elk with a bow. It would be his first time to chase elk with a stick and string. There are more than 7 things to consider. Here are some things my brother learned about elk hunting.

7 Miles    Everyday you hunt, plan on being able to hike 7 or more mountain miles. That means up and down rugged slopes at high altitude.

7 Hours of good sleep is essential. Have a comfortable bunk and camp to be rested and ready to hunt each day.

7 Days    It takes a week or more to dial in a Bull. There are times when you may get lucky but a week to 10 days is best.

7 water bottles     Staying hydrated is important.

7 x 7     A monster Royal Bull is a trophy and is hard earned.

7 Encounters    It will take several close encounters to tag a bull.

7 meat bags are needed.    When we backpack out an elk, you need 7 meat sacks, each will weigh around 100 pounds.

7 Layers    To be comfortable, you may need several layers of lighter clothing. If the weather changes, which it will, adding or removing a few layers will help. Under layers, Hecs, Camo, wicking layers, and more.

On the 7th day of his hunt, my brother tagged his first bull at 7 yards, 7 miles from camp, filling 7 meat bags.
