Missing hiker found safe after overnight search in Elkhorn Mountains

Elkhorn Search and Rescue was called out on May 7, 2026, at 1720 hours for a 73-year-old male who had gone for a short walk with his dog and failed to meet up with his friend. He was last seen at approximately 1400 hours in the Moose Creek area of the Elkhorn Mountains.

SAR members responded quickly and searched through the night, trackers determined his direction of travel was down the Crow Creek drainage. Despite extensive overnight efforts, he was not located by daylight.

Due to personnel being deployed overnight, Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue and Broadwater County Search and Rescue assisted in continuing operations. Aviation resources, including the Montana National Guard and Life Flight, were utilized during the search.

The subject was ultimately located after he emerged on the Broadwater side of Crow Creek.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lewis and Clark Search and Rescue, Broadwater County Search and Rescue, the U.S. Forest Service, the Montana National Guard, Life Flight, and Jefferson County Dispatch for their invaluable assistance and coordination.
