Rock Creek got a much-needed September refresh from the recent rain and cooler weather, and the fish should be happier for it, according to Kingfisher Fly Shop. Flows near Clinton were around 342 cfs and are settling back down, but the creek is still clear, cool, and in much better shape than it was during the late-August skinny-water days. Floating is done for the season, so it’s wade fishing from here on out. Stay sneaky and work the good stuff before stomping through it: pocket water, boulder edges, riffle drops, plunge pools, undercuts, shady banks, and soft seams. Hoppers, ants, and beetles still have some gas in the tank, while BWOs, October Caddis, Mahogany Duns, and Hecubas are starting to give things a distinctly fall flavor. Frenchies, Pheasant Tails, Perdigons, and caddis nymphs are all solid underneath, and if the clouds roll in, it’s worth swinging or stripping a small sculpin, Thin Mint, Bugger, or olive/black streamer. Basically, Rock Creek is slipping into fall mode, and that’s a pretty good place to be.
