60-Degree Days and Fish Playing Hard to Get…and Failing

Summer ghosted us without so much as a goodbye, but fall is throwing the afterparty — highs in the 60s all week (maybe a cheeky 70 after that), and the fish are RSVP’d. This is a summary of the report by Montana Fishing Guides on October 2, 2026: the Flathead, Clark Fork, and Blackfoot are all in full awesome fishing mode.

The Flathead, just down the road from Whitefish, is rolling 3,560 CFS at a toasty 53 degrees, packed with fish flowing down from the three forks and cruising up from the lake — and they’re happily demolishing medium mayflies, small attractors, and caddis like it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. History says October only brings more fish and bigger fish, so the ceiling on this thing hasn’t even been tested.

Meanwhile, a scenic 1.5–2 hour drive from Kalispell lands you on the Clark Fork, where big rainbows, cutthroat, and browns are playing mind games — dry fly on fire one day, dropper-only the next — and the Blackfoot’s streamer game is straight-up electric. So go ahead, mourn summer; the trout certainly aren’t. For your own day of this, call 406-233-9001 — the phone’s on 24/7, because fish don’t wait and neither should you!
