FWP: Region 4 commissioner proposes amendment to 2027-2028 Fishing Regulations

Special commission meeting to follow regular meeting

HELENA – Two items have been added to the agenda for tomorrow’s Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting. Vice Chair K.C. Walsh, who represents Region 4, offered an amendment to the proposed 2027-2028 Fishing Regulations. The regulations are on the agenda for tomorrow’s commission meeting, which will be held virtually via Zoom starting at 8 a.m.

Following the regular meeting, the commission will have a special meeting, which will be closed to the public. The commission will discuss litigation strategy.

The amendments proposed by Commissioner Walsh would change the proposed 2027-2028 Fishing Regulations as follows:

Yellowstone National Park Boundary to the mouth at the Jefferson River:

  • Catch-and-release for trout.
  • Artificial lures only with barbless, single-pointed hooks. No treble hooks or double hooks. Anglers may remove treble or double hooks from the lure and replace them with a single hook, or the shanks may be cut off the other hook points to leave a single hook. Lures with multiple hook attachments may still be used but any treble hook must be replaced with a single barbless hook. Barbs may be pinched down completely with pliers.

Quake Lake outlet to Lyons Bridge and Ennis Bridge to Ennis Lake:

  • Closed to fishing from boats/vessels.

Ennis Dam to the mouth at the Jefferson River:

  • Northern pike: no limit.

The public comment opportunity prior to the meeting for this amendment closes today at 4 p.m. The public can comment on this amendment during the meeting as well. Please register here to comment by 4 p.m. today.
