Stacked loads, which were once known as “duplex” shells back in the ’90s, are making a subtle comeback. This time, it is driven by rising costs of premium non-toxic shot and some updated ballistic thinking.

By layering different shot sizes or materials like steel, TSS, or bismuth in a single shell, manufacturers are aiming to boost pellet counts, improve mid-range patterns, and stretch value without rewriting the laws of physics. From blended TSS/steel loads to newly refined stacked steel options, these shells are designed to work best where most waterfowl shots actually happen: over decoys and at practical distances.

For a more thorough breakdown of how stacked loads work, where they shine, and how to use them, you can read the full article at Field & Stream.
