Mid-February in Montana is usually prime time for ice fishing, but this winter is still being stubborn. Many waters are offering limited hardwater opportunities, with inconsistent ice thickness, pressure cracks, and areas that look solid until you step closer. Some smaller lakes are starting to firm up, but anglers should still be checking ice constantly and avoiding sketchy shorelines.
Open water continues to be the more reliable option. The Madison and Missouri are producing steady trout action on midges, small nymphs, and slow-moving rigs. The best bite is still happening mid-day when the sun takes the edge off. Streamers can work, especially in deeper runs, but most fish are coming on subtle presentations.
Not the easiest time of year, but if you fish smart and stay cautious, there’s still plenty of action to be found.
