The following is from CSKT via Cynthia Benson:
2026 Spring Mack Days sponsored by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes will begin March 12th and end May 9th. Lake trout anglers will be competing for cash and prizes while helping in this important fish conservation effort on Flathead Lake to reduce non-native lake trout and increase native bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout. Anglers can fish every single day, weekends, a few days, or just one day-this event is designed for everyone to be able to participate. Every lake trout entry gives anglers a chance in the lottery drawings that begin at $2,000 and go to $600 or a chance to win other prizes in several different categories. Hooking onto a tagged lake trout is also a great way to win. There are over 9,000 tagged lake trout with values from $100-$500. Plus there are nine tagged lake trout with values from $10,000-(1), $5,000-(3), $1,000-(5). As the totals of the anglers go up they earn bonus amounts depending on their total on the last day of the event. Bonus amounts begin at $47 for a total of 11-30 lake trout, $92-31-50, $158-51-75, and on up. Every twenty-five lake trout entries moves you into a different dollar amount. Check out the bonus chart, rules, poster, fish ID, etc., on the website www.mackdays.com.
Please be sure and read the rules changes. Bonus amounts have gone up. Changes were made to the prize drawings and that money has been added to the bonus amounts.
There are new fish regulations coming out this spring for the Flathead Reservation. The slot 30-36” inch lake trout are to be returned to the lake. You cannot keep a slot fish. We have made changes in the rules to accommodate a tagged slot fish that an angler may want to have scanned. All fish over 30 inches have a value of $100 if they are tagged.
From Barry Hansen-CSKT Fisheries Biologist-
Every year we evaluate our progress in the ongoing work to reduce lake trout abundance and recover native species. Our metrics indicate enough reduction in lake trout abundance has occurred that we can afford to protect large lake trout in order to maintain quality angler opportunity. Accordingly, we are restoring the 30-36” slot limit on the Reservation portion of Flathead Lake to protect trophy lake trout. We want to be sure that Mack Days continues to effectively target lake trout less than 30”, but also want to be sure that Mack Days is not responsible for mortality of large lake trout. Therefore starting in the Spring 2026 contest we are making these changes: 1) all adipose-clipped lake trout >30” with tags, are worth $100 and must be brought to Blue Bay alive for verification, and 2) the large lake trout category remains worth $500, includes any fish greater than 34” that must be either photographed or brought to Blue Bay alive for verification. The $500 prize will be evenly divided among those entering a lake trout greater than 34”. Photographs must be time-stamped and with appropriate indication of the length of the fish.
Entries are taken at any time until the last day of the event. You can enter on the website under the events tab, email your name, address, age, enter when you turn in lake trout entries, or telephone your information.
Tight lines and good luck everyone!
