The cooler weather is giving Montana anglers a little relief heading into the August 15 weekend, and the fishing is responding. Cooler nights have helped bring water temperatures down on several western Montana rivers, with some fishing closures and restrictions being lifted.
On the Madison, the cooler weather has slowed some of the dry fly action, but nymphs and streamers are producing. Meanwhile, reservoir anglers are still finding plenty to chase. Walleye at Fort Peck have moved deeper into roughly 25 to 35 feet of water, with bottom bouncers, crawlers and crankbaits producing fish. Canyon Ferry, Hauser and Holter are also giving up walleye, trout and kokanee.
