Jan Axtell with Dan Bailey’s in Livingston reported on September 1, 2026 that rain gave the Yellowstone a muddy makeover, but it should clear as the week progresses. With flows at 2,080 CFS on September 1 and cool nights keeping temperatures low, target deeper runs, ledges, and seams. Hoppers were working before the rain, though stonefly-and-Prince Nymph rigs produced most consistently.
The Paradise Valley spring creeks remain productive, with morning midges, tricos, and baetis, plus a few evening sulphurs. Most bugs are size 20 or smaller, making accurate casts essential. Small nymphs work well in deeper pools, while terrestrials can tempt individual fish midday.
In Yellowstone National Park, muddy water from the Lamar is bringing some color to the Yellowstone. Once it clears, you can expect green drakes, mahogany duns, and other fall hatches. Soda Butte and Slough Creek should stay clear, with excellent fishing reported in Slough’s lower meadow. Terrestrials remain the best bet for now.
