Young hunters can get a head start on bird season at a free outdoor skills open house Sept. 15 at the Glasgow Trap Club, where youth 10 and older and their adult hunting partners can sharpen their shooting, safety, and field know-how before Montana’s youth pheasant and waterfowl weekends. Drop in anytime from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. for trap shooting, archery, bird identification, waterfowl tips, hunting-access information, bear awareness, regulation Q&A, and plenty of advice from FWP staff and local outdoors groups. Shotguns and other equipment will be available, though youth may bring a safe, unloaded shotgun of their own, and safety rules will be firmly in the driver’s seat. Everyone goes home with an orange bird vest and cap, while giveaways and door prizes add a little extra incentive. Parents or mentors need to stick around, and while bad weather could bench the shooting activities, the rest of the event will carry on.
