A caddis or crayfish paired with a midge, perdigon, or drowned ant has been money below the surface, especially in faster, shallow water, while dry-fly anglers should keep one eye peeled for brief pockets of rising fish and another on their drift because these trout are grading presentations like tiny, suspicious professors. Tricos, Cornfed Caddis, hoppers, and ants are all worth a shot, and covering water with a terrestrial is a solid plan when noses aren’t consistently showing.
Streamers remain the trickier card thanks to the weeds, though smaller natural patterns and occasional flashy flies can still earn an eat. Basically, just get out early, bring the nymph box and a few terrestrials, hunt the quicker water, and make that first cast count.
