It’s the last weekend of August and fishing looks classic late summer. On rivers like the Madison, Big Hole, and Yellowstone, trout are keying in on hoppers, beetles, and ants — especially mid-morning when the sun warms the banks. Flows are low, so stealth matters. Smaller tippets and a quiet approach will help.
Warmwater lakes are still producing. Fort Peck is holding strong for walleye and smallmouth; trolling crankbaits or running crawlers along deeper structure is best. Canyon Ferry and Nelson Reservoir are giving up decent perch and crappie.
Up high, mountain lakes are in prime condition before fall sets in. Cutthroat and brook trout are cruising shallows in the evenings and hitting small dries and spinners. Labor Day weekend anglers should plan on crowds — so if you want quiet water, set the alarm early.
