The Bighorn isn’t rolling out the welcome mat weather-wise this week, but the trout are still showing up for work. Windy, cold, and far from comfortable, the river is rewarding anglers who keep things simple and subsurface, with steady action for those willing to grind it out. It’s not a day for hero casts or delicate dries; however, if you use winter tactics and fish smart, the Bighorn can still make it worth your while.

Well it is slightly less breezy on the Bighorn this week than around Bozeman, but still not pleasant. The fishing should remain good but the wind will certainly make it unfavorable. Nymphing has been the most consistent method for catching fish. Sowbugs and scuds have been very effective subsurface. They should continue to work all winter. A BWO nymph paired with your sowbug has been a deadly nymph rig. An Olive Micro Mayfly, Pearl/ Olive Jiggy Perdigon, and Pheasant Tail have all been great BWO imitations. An angler may still find some fishing willing to eat a streamer but it won’t be very consistent. Sparkle Minnows, Skiddish Smolts, and Swim Coaches have all been productive. Maybe try something larger, like a silk kitty, if you are looking for a big predatory trout.
