Late January is still a mixed bag across Montana. Cold weather is here, but consistent ice is not. Many lakes and reservoirs are showing uneven ice conditions, with open water, skim ice, and pressure cracks all in play. Ice anglers are finding very limited safe opportunities, and checking thickness often is absolutely necessary. This is not a “send it” hardwater year so far.
Open-water fishing remains the safer and more consistent option. The Madison and Missouri are producing trout on midges and small nymphs, with the best action during the mid-day warmup. The Yellowstone is fishable in select stretches, but slow presentations are key. Streamers can still move a fish, but most success is coming from clean drifts and patience.
Winter fishing is there if you’re flexible. Just don’t force ice that isn’t ready yet.
