The Fort Peck Headquarters got some VIP company over the holiday weekend. Kelsey—daughter of the Captain himself—and her boyfriend, Chris Eckhoff, made the trek up from Missoula for a little long-weekend angling. The mission was to show Fort Peck what they were made of. The target was walleye.
If you’ve ever fished Fort Peck, you know the fish can be as stubborn when they want to be. Kelsey and Chris worked the river and the lake, dropping jigs and minnows down into the 20-to-25-foot sweet spot.
They were searching for walleye, but most of the local walleye population apparently decided to take the holiday weekend completely off. Instead, Chris and Kelsey found themselves playing tug-of-war with some hungry northern pike and lake trout.
So, what happened to the rest of the walleye? There are two theories floating around the boat:
- They simply weren’t feeding.
- The lake trout and pike were just aggressively beating them to the punch.
Despite the walleye vanishing act, you can’t exactly complain when you’re reeling in fighters like trout and pike. It was Kelsey and Chris’s very first time fishing the waters of Fort Peck with the Captain, and the trip was definitely an absolute win.
After all, a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work—and when you’re hauling in pike and lakers with good company, it’s impossible not to have a great time. Come back to the Headquarters soon, you two; those walleye owe you a rematch!
