If you’ve been waiting for the stars to align, the Missouri River just basically handed you the constellations. We survived the drenching rains, and while the anglers got soaked, the House of Fly reported that the trout are currently throwing a metabolic rager. The Dearborn dumped some “green gold” (tinted water) into the main stem, giving the fish enough cover to feel brave and the anglers enough hope to keep casting.
As the legendary House of Fly wisdom goes:
“The tug is the drug.”
And right now, the Mo’ is a high-grade pharmacy.
The Bug Situation: Mayfly Hangover & Caddis Parties
We’ve been riding the PMD wave for a month, and frankly, the fish are starting to get a PhD in “Spotting the Fake.” If you want to trick them now, you’ve got to bring your A-game. We’re talking long leaders and presentations so delicate they’d make a ballet dancer look clumsy.
- The Transition: PMDs are still around, but the Caddis have officially crashed the party.
- The Vibe: Afternoon “swing sets” with soft hackles are producing aerial acrobatics that’ll make your reel scream.
- On the Horizon: Tricos and Brown Drakes are warming up in the bullpen.
Tactical Playbook
- Dry Fly Snobs: If you aren’t seeing noses, don’t just stand there. Drop a Loop Wing Emerger or a Translucent Pupa.
- Nymphing: The Frenchy and Two Bit Hooker are still the heavy hitters.
- The “Heart Attack” Special: If you’re bored, throw a White Dungeon. It’s basically the “Go Big or Go Home” button of fly fishing.
Remember, Craig is currently the center of the universe. The boat ramps are busy, and the energy is high. As the House of Fly mantra reminds us:
“Keep it reel.”
Be cool to your fellow anglers; we’re all just chasing the same scales and tails.
Apres-Fish: Pizza & Pints
When you finally peel off the waders, The Trout Shop is pulling 12-hour shifts (7-7) to keep you caffeinated and fed. If you want the “over-the-top” meal experience at the Hub Saloon, do yourself a favor and hit Open Table.
Because at the end of the day, as House of Fly puts it:
“Life is short. Fish hard.”
The water is 56 degrees, the fish are hungry, and the beer is cold. What are you still doing reading this? Get to Craig.
