Every September, those of us who hunt and fish feel the changes. Cooler mornings, shorter days, and another season beginning. But September also includes a day we will never forget.
On September 11, 2001, 2,977 people lost their lives, and even more after that. A lot of us still remember exactly where we were when we heard the news. I was in Dover, Delaware, and only knew what was happening because I was an MSNBC addict, as the phone lines were down. We all remember the absolute shock of the images on TV (or in person), the silence, the chaos, and the heroic first responders and everyday Americans who actually ran toward the danger just to help others.
Twenty-five years later, that day still very much hits home.
Maybe that is why the outdoors is such a good place to think about that day. Sitting in the mountains before daylight breaks or watching the sun come up from the boat on the water has a way of reminding us what really matters. Family, freedom, and making it home.
So wherever this season takes you, take a second to remember those innocent lives we lost, those who answered the call, and the families who still carry that loss.
Be grateful for another sunrise, another season, and another day in this amazing country we call home.
Never forget 9/11.
