Essential Fishing Tips for the Yellowstone River Outside of Bozeman

The river is currently pushing 4,440 cfs at Livingston, and let’s just say the trout are not morning fish—but you need to be! According to the July 13, 2026 fishing report by Bozeman Fly Supply for the Yellowstone, and thanks to the recent heatwave, the early bird absolutely gets the worm (or, well, the fly). If you want the best action, head upstream because “up higher on the river has been better overall since it is slightly colder up there.”

Choose Your Weapon…

  • Sub-Surface Party (Nymphs): If you’re fishing deep, prepare to weed through the local whitefish population because there are “lots of whitefish on nymphs.” But hey, “nymphing has been killer” if you’re throwing Rubber Legs, Zirdles, or Blowtorches.
  • The Topwater Revival (Dries): If you actually want trout and not whitefish, the report is loud and clear: “If you are targeting trout try dries.” The surface game is officially “turning back on,” with Caddis, Parachute Adams, and Hippie Stompers absolutely “crushing fish.”
  • Big Meat (Streamers): Want to trigger a violent chase? Tie on a Dungeon, a Peanut Envy, or a Rusty Trombone if you want to “get on some fish chasing big flies.”
