A conservation project in Montana’s Mission Valley will receive $8.2 million in federal funding to protect farmland, wildlife habitat and water resources.

The Mission Valley Conservation Partnership, led by Flathead Land Trust, is one of 42 projects nationwide receiving more than $325 million through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program.

The farmer- and tribal-led project will use conservation easements to permanently protect working agricultural lands while supporting local farmers and ranchers.

The effort will also benefit the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, preserve wildlife habitat and protect water resources along the Flathead River corridor.

The USDA announced the funding Monday, saying 75% of the nationwide investment will go directly to agricultural producers or support conservation practices.
