If you are wondering what Fort Peck has been like lately, the fish are still very much awake and acting like they have somewhere to be. It is one of those weeks where just about everything is biting if you put the right stuff in front of them. Pike are still haunting the weed beds, walleyes are showing up for anyone willing to drag a crankbait around, and the water temps are sliding toward “bundle up” season. Here is Don Wilkins with the full rundown on what’s biting and where at Fort Peck:
Lake Trout- Great fishing still off of spawning areas in 45-60 FOW. Quite a few post-spawn fish out there that are aggressively feeding now. Vertical jigging with paddletails has still been producing the most fish for us.
Smallmouth- Slip bobbers and dead rods with minnows caught most of the fish the past week. Some small 3” paddletails and a 1/4 ounce VMC Moon Eye jig picked up a few as well.
Pike- Spoons and top water plugs over shallow weed beds are still the best bet. Some of the weeds are starting to lay down as we get farther towards winter, and some of the beds in 10-15 feet are holding more fish now.
Walleye- Picked up a couple of nice fish over the weekend, pulling some crankbaits around for a couple of hours. A Walleye Nations square bill in 15 FOW pulled one, and a Salmo Freediver 11 in about 35 FOW got the other.
Water temperatures were right around 50 degrees. Colder weather coming next week is probably going to bring that down pretty quickly.
