Humans cause up to 75% of wildfires in Montana, and discharge mechanisms such as steel-core or tracer ammunition, bullet strikes against rock or metal targets, and exploding targets create high-heat sparks that readily ignite dry brush. FWP reminds the public that target shooting is strictly prohibited on many FWP-owned sites, making it essential for shooters to verify site-specific restrictions, choose areas clear of flammable vegetation, and carry water, a shovel, or a fire extinguisher.
