After 40 years of hunting, it’s easy to assume that maybe I’ve developed some skills, that maybe I know what I’m doing. But wildlife continually surprise me, acting in unexpected ways. That was the case this fall when I was trying to fill my A tag. My friend and I had decided we would try and rattle a buck in toward the end of the rut. We slept in, avoiding an especially chilly morning, and crept into the woods after noon. We separated around a clearing with him off to my left and he started rattling. Amazingly, after only five or 10 minutes, a whitetail doe came jogging in toward my friend, closely followed by a buck. I shot the buck, my friend shot the doe. It was the quickest I’d ever seen two tags filled. It was also strange that it seemed like the rattling had brought in the doe. Why, I’m not sure. But the end result was success. So was it luck, or skill?
