THE FORT PECK SALMON ROUNDUP FOR 8/20/16

The Captain can’t seem to get enough of fishing for Chinook salmon on Fort Peck Reservoir. He was over there this past week and had a lot of fun. Tuesday he hopped in Bill Zahradka the Salmon Slayers boat and fished with his buddy Ted Toavs from Wolf Point. The trio ended up with 8 nice salmon. Wednesday Steve Hellegaard from Missoula traded places with Toavs and the fishing was phenomenal to say the least as they boated their limit of 15 salmon. Then on Thursday Hellegaard and the Captain went out and managed to boat 5 more salmon in the Captains boat.. Brads cut bait seemed to catch most of the fish all three days. They were in 100 to 140 feet of water and trolled their junk down 65-80 feet deep.
Eddie Mindt from the Lakeridge Lodging and Bait shop told the Captain that quite a few anglers are catching salmon now trolling the dam shallow. “I had some guys tell me that they were fishing on the bottom at 60-65 feet and catching salmon on Thursday near the dam”, said Mindt.
Look for a lot of boats to be fishing over the weekend. Last weekend there were reported at least 70 boats trolling on the face of the dam alone. Make sure you use proper boating etiquette when you are fishing to avoid snagging another boats fishing pole line or downrigger cable. This next week should be good fishing so good luck to everyone.
