If you didn’t get your elk last year here’s another reason to feel bad: More elk were harvested in Montana in the 2015 season than at any time since detailed records have been kept, according to data provided by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. FWP has been keeping more detailed reports for the last three years. Hunters are first contacted by phone during the annual harvest survey and those who were successful received a follow-up survey to get more details. In addition to the increase in harvest the numbers point to the fact that Region 3 has the highest elk harvest in the state, despite the large number of other predators like grizzly bears, black bears, wolves and mountain lions in the region. Also the highest percentage of elk taken on public land came out of Region 6 in northeastern Montana.
