After the fire: Rice Ridge photos

In search of the coveted morel mushroom I spent much of last weekend hiking the burn site of the Rice Ridge Fire. It’s strange picking through a burn site looking for fungus, a family typically associated with decomposition.

We are taught to believe that fire is this dangerous, scorching breath of flames that obliterates all in its path.  But in the middle of the 100,000 acre burn site, there’s just as much new life as death. New flowers, mushrooms and animals have already begun to make their homes there. Recovery logging is under way.
