Brett French reports the following:
How far should we go to preserve a historic landmark? The Bureau of Land Management is proposing extensive work to shore up Pompeys Pillar, the sandstone feature along the Yellowstone River where William Clark left his signature in 1806. Under the agency’s proposal, the crumbling rock structure would be reinforced with bolts, have cracks sealed with concrete and a sealant applied over sandstone.
