Game Wardens are also Peace Officers. They have a difficult job that requires them to approach sportsmen and women that have loaded weapons and knives in their possession. Law enforcement is a dangerous, and difficult, but important job.
Consider why you may be getting approached by law enforcement. It may be as simple as seeing how you are doing. They may just need to routinely check your license, permits, and access permission. If you are a student of the sport, you should be fine.
Most law enforcement officers are honest professionals. They are usually in uniform and have identification displayed. If not, ask for their identification. I have had strangers approach saying that they were wardens without any badges. When I brought out my cell phone for a photo, they left in a hurry. A legal Warden has nothing to hide.
What to do when being approached by a Warden
Secure any weapons but do not unload, unless requested to do so. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction.
If in a vehicle, stop, put into neutral, or wait to be approached. If in a boat allow the warden to dock with you. A buoy or spare life vest is handy to place between the gunwales.
Listen to instructions. Don’t be offended and have a good attitude.
Show respect and it will be returned. Most encounters are friendly.
