Summer Fishing Report: Big Hole River Conditions

The Big Hole River is in fantastic shape for summer fly fishing, offering excellent dry fly and streamer action now that the Salmonfly hatch has wrapped up. While the fishing and weather look perfect for the week ahead, anglers should note the outfitter’s report below, which states that 2026 Montana fishing licenses are now available via the FWP website; anglers should confirm current purchase options directly with Montana FWP.

Here’s the latest report for the Big Hole for June 25, 2026 by Montana Troutfitters:

***2026 MT LICENSE SEASON UPDATE***

As of 03/01/2026 all Montana Fishing Licenses, Conservation Licenses and all other recreation licenses are now ONLINE purchase only. Please visit FWP website to obtain your 2026 season licenses.

The Big Hole Fishing report has been great lately. The river is in fantastic shape and we have been having dry fly and sub surface action. The Salmonflies have wrapped up on all sections of the river. You might find some hatching on the warmer days on the upper river but for the most part they are finished. We are seeing Golden Stones, PMD’s, Caddis and some Green Drakes. Prospecting with a chernobyl and a PMD dropper has been working well. You can also find some fish sipping PMD’s in the flats around midday. Streamers on the lower Big Hole have been working well. The weather and conditions look perfect for the upcoming week.

Editor’s note: Corrected the introduction to stop asserting as fact that 2026 Montana fishing licenses are 'online purchase only,' a claim not supported by the official FWP regulations, which list FWP offices and license providers as purchase options.
